The Faculty of Biology and Chemistry was established in 1970. The history of the faculty is closely connected with the name of Dr., Professor L.F. Mavrinskaya who was the founder of the first Department – the Department of Zoology. John P. Mozgovoy, the senior lecturer, was the first dean of the Chemistry and Biology faculty; he made a great contribution into the development of the faculty.

Today the faculty of Biology continues to develope the traditions of its founders. Fourteen doctors of sciences and professors, nineteen candidates of sciences and senior lecturers, honoured workers of science, full and corresponding members of the Russian Academy of Sciences teach at the faculty.

Biology is a synthetic science that requires profound knowledge of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Philosophy. The curriculum is designed to provide students with advanced theoretical and practical instruction. Practical training is implemented on the base of Zhiguli state reserve, Krasnosamarsky forestry, Samara Botanic Garden, etc.

The Departments actively implement research activities and participate in grant programmes of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and foreign foundations. The academics and students of Biology conduct research work by request of regional enterprises and establishments.

The faculty effectively encourages students’ scientific work. Students of Biology work in four research laboratories (genetics, hydrobiology, ecological biochemistry, biology of ageing), in students’ scientific circles. They actively participate in regional, all-Russian and international scientific schools and conferences to develop scientific publications.

Prospective students have opportunities to conduct research in leading scientific and research institutes in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Novosibirsk, and abroad.

The faculty maintains close scientific cooperation with the Institute for Ecology of the Volga Basin of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Ministry of Nature Management, Forestry and Environmental Protection of Samara Region, the Ministry of Education and Science of Samara Region, and the Samara regional natural history study group.
